I NEED TO UNLOCK THIS MOVE! | Bike Trials Solo Ride
After watching a Charlie Rolls tutorial on how to do a wheel swap with a pedal kick, I decided to give it a try in earnest. This is an extremely useful move in trials... but I hadn't even unlocked the move.

    I too learnt this move from charlie. I could do something similar before but this is a slightly different technique. What i was doing before was pure pedal kick, lots of power/very inefficient. The pedal kick method is when you sit back into a squat position, ass over the rear wheel, then thrust forward with a heavy kick to the pedal. In some situations i still use this but this is NOT the method charlie shows. The difference comes from body position and motion. In the move charlie shows the body doesn't thrust forward and the 'kick' is very subtle, not really the same as a pedal kick like you would use to hop a gap etc. You need to lean far forwards over the front wheel. Then bounce, the legs shouldn't bend much and the motion comes from the flex in the ankles and a quick push from the arms. The small kick just gets the bike in motion so you're not having to lift the whole weight of the bike with your arms. You can actually do this move without the kick, for example if your back wheel is on dodgy ground where it cant roll but you need to do all the lifting work with your arms (quite strenuous). The reason you were falling back is because you didn't start with your weight far forward enough. As you body doesn't move much in this technique you need to position it at the start where you plan to finish. Lean forward of the handle bar so your body is over the front wheel. Hope this helps

    You are not getting any forward momentum with your torso, all the bike movement is from your arms and legs. Maybe because you are too far forward to start the pedal kick. Looking at Aaron's pedal kick tutorial, you should be behind the bb when you begin the pedal stroke and ahead of the bb when you finish. I have trouble with that one too. But at least now I know the technical term for my dysfunction, "overthinking it and doing weird crap" 😀

    if that was the first time it was totally awesome 👏👏 you can try to put your chest more forward over the handlebars in the starting position. The way I sometimes visualize this movement is like it was a wave that's starting from the chest, than goes through the pelvis and continues to the lower body. Like a wave from a whip hehe Also I have a feeling you are focusing a lot on the kick part. the kick here is very slight, focus more on the upper body :) If you get the timing right, the power in this movement comes from the springiness of the tires and the bike itself and it doesn't consume much energy

      Trials is NOT hard and the new bikes make it incredibly easy. It's like a pogo stick. If you are somewhat athletic and have a history of jumping on rocks when young anyone can do it. These guys are well into their 50s so why it looks hard.

    • @martinschwartz7342
      @martinschwartz7342 Місяць тому

      @ Maybe because I am in my mid-seventies. When I was in my twenties I rode motorcycle trials. It wasn’t easy to learn. It took a lot of practice.

    • @ThisIsBikeTrials
      @ThisIsBikeTrials Місяць тому

      @huckfin1598 The more modern geometry certainly makes it easier and I agree anyone can learn to do it, but I disagree that it's "easy". If it was, anyone could beat Jack Cathy after 10 minutes on a trials bike and Danny MacAskill wouldn't require literally 700 attempts for some of his lines. It's one thing to be able to operate the bike, it's yet another to ride obstacles and string moves and obstacles together. The whole point is to select difficult lines and challenges, but "difficult" is relative, depending on any number of factors. I guess I'd say the same for any sport actually: basketball, football, hockey, auto racing, etc. The sports are "easy" (anyone can bounce a ball, run, carry a stick, drive a car, ...) and the equipment these days is amazing. But if it was so easy to be exceptional, there'd be no need for the NBA, NFL, NHL, Formula 1, etc. The challenge is in pushing yourself so that you're constantly overcoming harder challenges. Otherwise, what's the point of any sport?

    • @fred.piedritas
      @fred.piedritas Місяць тому

      @@huckfin1598"have a history of jumping on rocks when young" is actually quite a significant "detail". Children are extremely fast to learn and also way more fearless. (a scientific fact based on brain development + they literally have lower center of mass + more flexible bones, so you can say designed to fall) When learning as an adult I'd say it's a very long and difficult process

  • @ampfrog001
    @ampfrog001 Місяць тому

    Maybe some easy-to-move pavers for "ground is lava" aka variable sized gaps (and staying on back wheel after a longer gap) and turning in place on back wheel - essentially too small to get both wheels down on. "Easy to move" means you can mix it up/move them around often and not just get good at one known route through them. I have about a dozen flat 4" thick cement chunks in my backyard for this (less convenient to move than pavers, but got them for free). Great skill training and endurance workout to just keep bouncing around on as long as possible with low consequence before moving to taller less flat rocks. Also, don't build what you have down the road... if there is a park with large boulders to roll over 10 mins away, don't build the same in your backyard. Build unique obstacles. I have logs in my yard cause it's all boulders or manmade cement out here in the desert.

    yay you have a lot of space, nice! If I were you I would be thinking in terms of skills I am planning to learn in the upcoming season. Based on your videos I saw I think it would make a huuuuge sense for you to learn that technique that we use to get the bike from both wheels to the back, dunno its name in english tbh. I mean that dynamic movement that you can do especially when the front is higher than the back. The tires that you have there also seem super cool, you might wanna put something inside so the edges get little stiffer and rideable. And I think just a good stock of pallets is a perfect home trials park obstacle, you can make whatever you need out of them

    Once I got used to bar tape I really liked it. At first it felt horrible. Doesn't feel comfortable like foam or rubber grips but this grip and thinness helps loads with arm pump. I'm using hashtags too at the moment. Carthy tape is also good. I find gloves are essential with tape otherwise it tears my hands to pieces on longer rides!

    Typical trials tire pressure, all about grip and a light tap of the rim at times. Too much air and we get rebounded back from an obstacle instead of cleaning it. So often, people see my trials bike's tires squish and wrinkle as I am cleaning a section and they say, you need to pump up your tires. I say, oh hells noes!!

    hi, try to lower your chest more towards the handlebars. And once you are there, initiate the movement by pulling the handlebars a little like towards your belly button.
